The name for a part where people stand to talk and eat depends on the situation. A formal event like this which also includes alcohol would be called a cocktail party. I believe cocktail party is the most likely answer to your question, but if the event is during the day, and particularly if there is no alcohol served, the term "reception" might be better. 立食パーティは状況によって言い方が異なります。フォーマルなイベントなどでは、Cocktail partyと呼ばれることもありますし、恐らくこれを質問したかったのではないかと思います。けど、昼間開かれて、特にアルコールがないようなパーティはReceptionというほうが自然です。素敵な一日を

　他の回答者さんとかぶるものがありますが、3つ挙げてみました。（1）　読んで字のごとくという感じですが、「立食」を表す表現です。buffet って何？と聞かれて「stand-up meal のことだよ」と答えることができる感じです。つまり、（1）と（2）はある意味で同じことだと言えます。　なお、buffet は元々はフラスンス語ですが、日本語では「バフェ」や「ビュッフェ」と言われますね。英語では /bʌ́fət/ で、カタカナにすると「バファット」のような感じです。（3）　a wedding reception というと「結婚披露宴」のことです。おっちゃんぬ自身は立食形式の披露宴を経験したことはありませんが、あくまでも披露宴のことを言うのであればこの表現が使えます。　ご参考になりましたでしょうか。

The name of a standing party where food and drink is served is called a cocktail party. Similarly, after a wedding, the 'after party' is normally referred to as a wedding reception. Not every wedding reception is a cocktail party but a cocktail party after a wedding is also a type of wedding reception.

食べ物と飲み物を提供する立食パーティは、cocktail party と呼ばれます。同様に、結婚式の後のアフターパーティは通常、wedding reception と呼ばれます。すべてのwedding reception がcocktail party ではありませんが、結婚式後のcocktail party も wedding reception の一種です。

I was expecting a sit down dinner with drinks...it turned out to be a buffet event instead.

A buffet event is when arranged seating is not part of the proposition...People are eating and drinking while standing... "Mingling" with other guests or attendees...Usually serving themselves,from a selection of food and drinks..."I was expecting a sit down dinner with drinks...it turned out to be a buffet event instead."
