天の川は英語で◯◯！七夕文化を英語で紹介しよう

７月といえば七夕。七夕のお話自体はほかの国にもあるようですが、その内容は国によって異なります。日本独自の七夕文化について、海外の友達に英語で紹介してみましょう！

七夕とは

七夕を紹介する上で欠かせないのが、織姫と彦星のお話。何も知らない外国の人に対して、まずはあらすじを説明してみましょう！ここで紹介するストーリー以外にも諸説あるようなので、自分が知ってる物語にアレンジしてくださいね。

• Tanabata is an event that originated from the legend of two stars called Ori-hime and Hiko-boshi. It is held on July 7th every year.
  「七夕は２つの星、織姫と彦星の伝説が元になっている行事で、毎年７月７日に行われます」
• Tanabaka is also known as the Star Festival in English.
  「七夕は英語で"the Star festival"とも言われます」
• Orihime represents Vega, Hikoboshi represents Altair.
  「織姫はベガ、彦星はアルタイルの星のことです」
• Orihime and Hikoboshi fell in love and were so crazy about each other that they could not focus on their work.
  「織姫と彦星は恋に落ち、お互いに夢中になって、仕事をしなくなってしまいました」
• The heavenly gods got angry and separated Orihime and Hikoboshi onto the different sides of the Milk Way, or Ama-no-gawa in Japanese.
  「怒った天の神様は、2人を天の川で引き離してしまいました」
• However, the heavenly gods felt sorry for them and allowed them to cross the Ama-no-gawa to meet each other once a year on July 7th.
  「哀れな2人を気の毒に思った神様は、年に一度だけ、７月７日に天の川を渡って2人が会うことを許しました」
• On this day, many people pray for good weather on July 7th, because if it rains, Orihime and Hikoboshi will not be able to meet up due to the rising water levels of Ama-no-gawa.
  「7月7日になると、多くの人がこの日が晴れるように願います。なぜなら、雨が降ると天の川の水かさが増して2人が会うことができなくなってしまうからです」
• It is said that Tanabata is a special day for lovers because it is the day where lovers reunite.
  「七夕は、恋人同士が年に一度再会する、ロマンチックな日とも言われます」

七夕にやること

織姫と彦星のお話がわかったところで、お次は七夕に行うおなじみの風習について考えてみましょう。笹の飾り付けや文字の書いてある短冊など、外国の方から見たら不思議なものばかりなはず。「あの笹は何？」なんて質問されたときにしっかり答えられるように、チェックしておきましょう。

• We put up bamboo decorations to celebrate the reunion of Orihime and Hikoboshi on Tanabata.
  「七夕には織姫と彦星の再会をお祝いするために、笹を飾ります」
• We hang strips of paper called Tanzaku and other paper accessories on the bamboo sticks.
  「笹には短冊と言われる細長い紙や、紙の飾りを吊るします」
• It is believed that your wish will come true if you write it on the Tanzaku and hang it on the bamboo sticks.
  「短冊に願いごとを書いて笹に吊るすと、その願いが叶うと言われています」
• When Tanabata is around the corner, shopping malls and schools put up the Tanabata bamboo decorations where you can write your wish on the Tanzaku and hang them up.
  「七夕が近づくとショッピングモールや学校が短冊を置いていることがあるので、見つけたら書いてみてくださいね」
• There are many Tanabata-related festivals and events all over Japan in the month of Tanabata. Do join these activities during this period.
  「七夕の前後には日本全国でたくさんのお祭りやイベントが行われます。チャンスがあったら行ってみてくださいね」

では、実際に七夕について話すときのことをイメージして会話例を見てみましょう。Mariaと麻美が街を歩いていて、七夕の笹を見かけたシチュエーションです。

M：What’s that bamboo stick decorated with papers?
「あの紙が飾ってある笹は何？」

A：It’s a decoration for Tanabata. It is said that your wish will come true if you write them on these strips of paper called tanzaku.
「七夕の飾りだよ。短冊っていう細長い紙に願い事を書くと願いが叶うって言われてるの」

M：That’s awesome! I wanna do that!
「すごい！私も書いてみたい！」

A：What’s your wish?
「何をお願いするの？」

M：I wish to be able to speak Japanese more fluently. What about you?
「『日本語がもっと上手に話せるようになりますように』かなぁ。麻美は？」

A：It's a good idea, isn't it? I saw the Tanabata bamboo decorations at the supermarket in front of the station so let’s go!
